Wine behind the label 2006 This is a young Montefalco enterprise, only bortling since 1999 and complering a new cellar in 2003. There are 11ha of vineyards bur only 8ha in producrion. Consultant enologist Emiliano Falsini has been employed since 2001 and his winemaking style shows in the wines. The Sagrantino is harvested very late to achieve fUIIy ripe rannins and then spends up to a months on its skins before halfis aged in new barriques, halfin large casks. The oak is balanced and spice, floral and truffle aromas are followed by concentrated bitter chocolate, black cherry and black plum fruit on the palate. There is considerable depth, breadth and extract in the 2001. Rosso is a typical blend of Sangiovese with around 15% each of Sagrantino and MedoL The 03 has striking fruit but needs 3-5 years' age. Admirable 015 of both reds have slightly less potential but are softer and more forward. Sagrantino Passito is also made. New in 04 is a white, half Grechetto and half old-vine Trebbiano Spoletino picked in November. The grapes are vinified separately and the wine has good weight, texture and structure with a refined minerallylsalty component. (PW) |
